SHIN LIU

About

Portrait of Shin Liu

Shin Liu is a product and industrial designer working across health, function and culture, with a practice spanning human-centred research, form development, structural prototyping and digital fabrication.

I am interested in turning complex or emotionally sensitive needs into products that feel clear, approachable and physically meaningful. My process moves between sketching, 3D modelling, electronics, soft materials and full-scale making, so that ideas are tested through real objects rather than presentation alone.

Education

2024.02 - 2025.12

RMIT University

Master of Design Innovation and Technology

Coursework covered soundscape and sensory design, creative coding, flexible 3D modelling, service design, data visualisation and ethical AI. The programme strengthened my ability to connect research, interaction, prototyping and emerging technologies within product-design projects.

2019.09 - 2023.06

Shanghai Institute of Technology

Bachelor of Industrial Design

Training included product styling, brand and visual design, product photography, model making, computer-aided 3D design, materials, structure and product communication. The programme established a solid foundation in form development, rendering and physical prototyping.

Experience

2025.05 - 至今

freelance designer

Product Design

Chain coffee shop cultural and creative product design: Responsible for modeling and structural design of cup shapes and display merchandise, producing mass production engineering drawings, and overseeing the manufacturing and deployment of customized in-store products. 2D cosplay wearable prop design and modeling: Completed prop disassembly, lightweight structural optimization, and 3D printing compatibility adjustments, successfully launching over ten custom prop sets; proficient in applying common 3C design techniques such as snap-fit joints and thin-wall structures. Handled 3D printing model optimization and custom prop fabrication projects, assisting design students and individual clients with structural refinement, proportion adjustment, component decomposition, and print adaptability to enhance the feasibility of turning conceptual designs into physical prototypes.

2025.03 - 2025.06

RMIT Ethical AI Studio - AI for Good

Concept & Product Designer

Developed GOGO, an AI-enhanced guide-dog collar concept exploring navigation, tactile feedback, health monitoring and bidirectional communication. The project translated ethical principles into design decisions around animal welfare, privacy, explainability and human control.

2024.11 - 2025.06

Hangzhou Pika Technology Co., Ltd.

Product Design Intern

Created and refined 3D character models for collectible figures, developing proportion, pose and expression while preserving the original IP language. Rebuilt geometry for FDM printing through wall-thickness control, part splitting, centre-of-gravity adjustment and reduced supports, improving print stability and success rate.

2023.03 - 2023.05

Powerlong Museum, Shanghai

Exhibition Assistant

Prepared and edited interpretive text for more than 100 artworks and supported public programmes, salons and visitor communication. The experience strengthened my ability to translate abstract creative ideas into clear narratives for a general audience.

2022.12 - 2023.03

Fujian Haike Survey and Design Institute

Design Assistant

Supported the preparation, maintenance and version control of technical documents and drawings for marine-survey projects. The role introduced formal file standards, staged delivery and multidisciplinary design coordination.

2022.02 - 2022.06

Shanghai Mengsu Pet Products Co., Ltd.

Product Design Intern

Developed the form and 3D model of a shared pet fragrance bottle through multiple design rounds, producing sketches, Rhino models and KeyShot renders. Also contributed to packaging structure, visual references and related IP graphics, gaining experience from brief and competitor research through modelling and review.

2020.12 - 2021.12

Shanghai Haozi Culture Communication Co., Ltd.

Teaching Assistant / Instructor

Designed and delivered Chinese cultural-learning experiences for more than 400 international-school students. Course materials, step cards, tools and activities were iterated through classroom observation and student feedback to improve participation and completion.
